South Atlantic Lobster

West Coast Rock Lobster (Jasus lalandii)

Native to the icy Atlantic waters along South Africa’s western shoreline, the West Coast rock lobster—locally known as “kreef”—thrives among kelp beds and rocky reefs. This species is renowned for its firm, flavourful meat with a distinctive oceanic taste, making it a favourite in fine dining and traditional braais.

Caught using baited traps and processed live in saltwater tanks, these lobsters are chilled and shipped fresh to global markets. Due to their slow growth and complex lifecycle, West Coast rock lobsters are available in limited quantities under strict quotas, ensuring sustainability and premium quality.

South Coast Rock Lobster (Palinurus gilchristi)

Harvested from the deep, temperate waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, the South Coast rock lobster is a premium cold-water species known for its rose-coloured shell and exceptional tail yield — up to 45% of total body mass. Caught year-round using long-line traps at depths of 50–150 meters in 8–10°C waters, this lobster offers a delicate flavour and outstanding value.

Processed onboard HACCP-approved vessels and graded at our FDA/HACCP-certified facility in Cape Town, South Coast lobster tails are a market leader in the U.S. frozen tail segment. Whole raw frozen and live lobsters are also highly sought after in European and Asian markets, where they are often compared to the prized European spiny lobster.
